ERNIE (Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment) is the name given to the random number generation system used by NS&I to select winning Premium Bonds numbers each month. The name is both an acronym and a reference to Ernest Marples, the UK Postmaster General who introduced Premium Bonds in 1956. ERNIE has gone through five generations of technology, evolving from thermionic valve-based hardware to modern quantum random number generation.
ERNIE 1 (1956) used neon valves and thermal noise to generate random numbers, processing at a rate of a few hundred numbers per minute. ERNIE 2 (1970s) used transistor technology. ERNIE 3 (1990s) used radioactive decay as a randomness source. ERNIE 4 (2004) used electronic noise from a Zener diode. ERNIE 5 (2019-present) uses quantum random number generation based on the quantum behavior of photons, generating billions of random numbers per second. The current ERNIE 5 system ensures complete fairness — every £1 bond has exactly the same probability of winning, with no pattern or bias in the selection process.
Real-World Example
Each month, ERNIE 5 generates winning bond numbers using quantum random number generation. The system knows every active Premium Bond number and selects winners at random across all prize tiers, from £25 to £1 million. For the July 2026 draw, ERNIE selected 6,049,850 winning numbers from over 133 billion eligible bonds. The two £1 million jackpot winners were personally notified by NS&I's 'Agent Million'.
